What is Bowen

DSCF1060What is Bowen?

Bowen Therapy is a drug-free, non-invasive, hands on remedial therapy which can be given through light clothing, with the client sitting, standing or lying down.

It has a remarkable record of success with people affected by a wide range of problems, often when nothing else has helped. Bowen helps the body’s systems rebalance and promotes healing, allowing the body to re-set itself. It is suitable for men, women, children. Animals respond well to the Bowen Technique, but trained practitioners should seek veterinary permission first. (Veterinary Surgeon’s Act 1962/1966)

Practitioners do not diagnose, prescribe or alter medication, although they may recommend regular assessment by a doctor, in case medications doses need to be adjusted.

DSCF1057What is the treatment like?

Using fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual. No hard tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.

Rather than making the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the changes it requires. Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a couple of minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.

Bowen is generally pleasant to receive, each session lasting up to 60 minutes, depending on the age of the client and nature of their problem. Many clients become so relaxed, they fall asleep during the treatment.

DSCF1048Bowen is completely safe. There are no contraindications. One of the philosophies of Bowen, is that “Less is more”. The body will accept it when it is ready to be healed. The body is capable of restoring health and Bowen gently suggests the correction to the body, without force.

Rather than Bowen treating a symptom, we say that Bowen addresses the body which has certain symptoms. These have included symptoms such as headache, neck pain/whiplash, ear and jaw problems, hay fever, shoulder problems, respiratory problems, breast problems, back pain, digestive problems, infant colic, pregnancy, fertility and menstrual problems, pelvic pain, sciatica, groin sprain, hamstring, knee and ankle/foot problems, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel and RSI. In addition, joint problems, muscular aches and discomfort and fatigue. From this extensive list, you can see how Bowen is truly holistic – addressing every part of the body. People also benefit from relief from emotional problems like depression and anxiety and tend to feel more able to cope with life generally.
